The Player Performance Measurement (PPM) is a critical metric for evaluating a golfer's performance during a tournament. It is determined by subtracting the course rating from the golfer’s score, and then subtracting the golfer’s entering handicap from that result. The final PPM represents how well the golfer performed relative to their established skill level, taking into account the course difficulty. A positive PPM reflects a decline in performance, while a negative PPM indicates improvement.
For example, if a golfer has a handicap of 9 and they shoot a score of 80 on a course rated at 70.8, the PPM calculation would be:
The individual PPM of a golfer is added to the team’s total PPM. The team’s performance is then evaluated based on the sum of the individual PPMs of all team members.
After each tournament, a golfer's entering handicap is recalculated based on their PPM and their entering handicap. The formula for updating a golfer's handicap is:
This updated handicap will be used as the golfer's entering handicap in the next tournament. This system is not endorsed by the USGA and should not be considered as an official handicap. We initially use a GHIN handicap, but after a player’s first round, it is replaced with our method of recalculating a handicap, which is updated after the completion of any Big Blitz competition.
